Consultation has concluded

The City is looking at ways to manage crowds at its beaches, curbing issues like litter and illegal parking, while creating a space for our residents to enjoy safely for years to come.

During the COVID-19 pandemic City beaches saw intensified issues related to overcrowding, illegal parking, litter and other problematic behaviour. While these problems were heightened during the pandemic, they are not unique to 2020. The City operates three beaches: Jones Beach, Sunset Beach and the Lakeside Park Beach. During the 2020 beach season the City instituted temporary:

  • Capacity enforcement through the deployment of security personnel
  • Reduced operating hours
  • Restricted access
  • Stepped up seasonal fines for illegal parking

While these efforts were temporary for the 2020 season, we are looking at ways to ensure overcrowding and other issues surrounding beaches don't continue in the future, even after the pandemic has subsided. The strategy will guide investments, operations and resource allocation for beaches witha focus on improving visitor experiences and offsetting negative impacts. With this in mind staff are preparing to develop a beach strategy, with action items to ensure beaches operate smoothly for residents and visitors alike.

To do that we want to hear from our residents and collect information on how they use beaches, and what they would like to see moving forward. Please fill out the survey below before March 19 at 4 p.m. and help the community get the best out of beaches.

    Please provide your responses based on a ‘normal’ year – not the exceptional circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the end of the survey, you will have an opportunity to share your thoughts on how the beach should be managed during the COVID-19 pandemic should it continue into the summer.
